Is Japan Cool? →
ANA has a new J-Cool advertising campaign which lets you vote on the ‘coolness’ of different Japanese things. Personally, I think they should have ‘squat toilets’ in there instead of ‘high tech toilets’. Guess it’s too much to ask for though. Fun to look through!

Adventures in Testing Land!
300+ graded exams later… The following are some interesting blurbs from my latest second years’ test. They’re all fun and worth considering in their own ways! (The question style was ‘Free Answer’—they listened to a question on a CD and then had a large, blank area to write their answer in. Before the test they were told to study the key expressions we used...

A Halloween Story by “Team Jack o’ Lantern” in OCII There once was a jack o’ lantern. It was a normal pumpkin. It was made by an old man. It was very small. The old man was very big. He had no hair. One day the pumpkin was possessed by a devil. The old man killed by the jack o’ lantern. He became a zombie. They lived happily ever after. (I love story...

Anonymous asked: Mate, I was on the JET program from 2004 through till 2007. They were the best years of my life. I was feeling a little nostalgic and decided to google for people currently on the program and blogging. It's great to have found your page--you seem to be enjoying the experience as much as I did. I'm still in Japan, but it's not the same as I'm in Tokyo and married with a couple...

Does America Have Four Seasons?
Since coming to Japan last year, I’ve been asked if America* has four seasons more times than I care to remember. While it seems like a ‘uh… duh!’ question on its surface, the frequency which I’ve encountered it begged a closer examination of whether or not “America” has four seasons and why the heck everyone keeps asking me to verify their existence. My...

By Any Other Name
I let my upper-level class choose whether or not they wanted an English nickname for class, and some of them chose: Connor, Jacob, Chloe, Samantha, Justin, Hannah, David, Sophie, Jackson, Ashley, Olivia, and Sebastian. (All were in the Top 100 for babies in the U.S. in 2009, according to the Social Security Administration.) I’m rather impressed. Now to see if they remember to respond...

Donate to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Program →
Daniel and I are fine here in Nagano-ken. The earthquake here was a 3 or 4 on the Japanese scale (aka shaking, but no major damage.) The current death toll is estimated at 200-300 because of the tsunami, but there’s no doubt that will climb over the next few days. Prayers for the affected regions and donations to the relief efforts are much appreciated. Hopefully the tsunami...
